A thought

Okay, this was a random thought I got a couple days ago. (I have no clue how my mind works or how this came up in the conversation I was having with my mom.) But, I was thinking. Scientists believe that ADHD has a genetic link. I think that there is a genetic link - seeing as how ADHD is caused by low dopamine levels in the brain and stuff that is related to neurotransmitters is typically genetically linked. But, the question is? Why doesn't everyone in a family have ADHD? The answer to that could be ADHD is either recessive or dominant. Whatever it is, it is.

Do I think that ADHD is totally genetic? No. I think that our genetics might say we are supposed to have it, but our life experiences prevent it from emerging. I think that ADHD happens when a person, with naturally lower levels of dopamine, has stressful events throughout their lives. Those stressful events cause them to "push the little button" in their heads that makes ADHD visible. (Example: A child that carries the "ADHD" gene, but it is dormant, has parents that are going through a nasty divorce from the time the child is about six to ten. The child's life is hectic, not really stable. The child begins reacting to all the stress in their life by not doing their homework - they have other stuff to worry about - by seeming to daze off when in actuality they are thinking what could have been different (or something similar). Once the divorce is over and things settle down they have learned "negative" behaviors that are kept going by their low dopamine levels.

Too bad, I'm not far enough in college to get a study going. I think it'd be interesting to see what type of correlation there is between the emergence of ADHD and stressful life events in a child's life. I think it'd be really interesting to find out.

*Note to people: If what I say doesn't make sense oh well. I tried to make sense. If you want to disagree with what I have to say then fine. But if you criticize me for how I put it, grrr. That annoys me.
